For the first time ever a world class motor-sport event was given the green light and hosted on one of Cape Towns most historic landmarks, namely the Grand Parade Cape Town. On Sunday, 20 March the Last Lion Lifestyle crew hosted a private Supercar Airstrip Attack event at the Saldanha Airfield. The day started off at Velocity cars in Century City where Supercar owners & spectators were treated to mouth watering exotics - from the very special Lamborghini Aventador SV, one of the only few in the country, a hand full of brand new Porsche GT3 RS's and customised Ferrari 458's to name but a few. Club S2K aka the Honda S2000 club recently hosted a private top end drag racing event for their members and a few other invited clubs like the Type R Owners club and HAVOC, Honda Accord Vtec Owners Club. There were also a few Subaru’s and one or two other random cars present at the event. When you mention “legal” top end racing in Cape Town, only one place comes to mind, Saldanha Airfield. [more]

This awesome 26 minute documentary was put together by Thamas Sandell about the experience and build up leading towards the African Endurance Series 9 Hour at Killarney. It specifically focuses on the Africa Le Mans team with their Ginetta GT4 before, during and after the race. It also features the drivers, Greg Mills, local racing legend Sarel vd Merwe and international race ace Jan Lammers. [more]

The 7th Last Lion Lifestyle event for 2015 kicked off to a great start at the Westin in CT. The organizers Ish Kaskar & Junaid Hamid invited guests to arrive from 9am, however by 8:45 the parking courtyard was already bursting at its seams with Cape Town's finest supercars. Here’s some coverage we managed to capture from this year’s All Tar Rally hosted by the CCMMCC and WPMC. As always the All Tar Rally proves to be extremely demanding for participating teams. This event which is known to be a car breaker almost all of the vehicles needs constant maintenance during stages. Drivers are challenged to drive their cars at maximum speed through tight stages covering almost all of the tarred area of Killarney Raceway. [more]

The 6th of June saw the 4th round of the regional Power Series race meeting at Killarney. The event was much looked forward to by many as it included the Cape Town leg of the national African 3 hour endurance race. What made it interesting was that this race was set to start at 4pm and run well into darkness, creating that Le Mans type of feel. So we decided to put together a little social event in the form of a 2 hour go kart endurance race at our HQ in Kenilworth Karting for a few interested car clubs and crews. I used to participate in these back in the day, when I was half my current size, and always remembered it to be huge amounts of fun. Racing against friends, rivals and some real “racing” drivers, it always posed a challenge to finish the race on the podium. [more]

Saturday the 30th of May started off with doom and gloomy clouds hanging over Cape Town with rain being a high potential. The track day was set to happen from 2pm till 6pm not being the usual morning sessions we’re become so used to. The rain held off and the track was open and ready for all. More than 12 000 spectators – a record total – attended the three days of adrenaline-fuelled racing, including Classic Car Friday. Those that made it to the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb on Sunday in particular were treated to plenty of thrills and even a couple of spills. Desmond Gutzeit proved the class of the field on the 2015 Jaguar Simola Hillclimb, winning the highly anticipated King of the Hill challenge by setting a new lap record of 40.148 sec on his very last run. When motor sport fans plan their holidays, true petrol heads will always check how they can maximise their vacation by adding as much "car" related events to attend. That's exactly what we did in this case. Thailand is a quick 2 hour flight from Malaysia and it hosts an international motor show every year in the week after the Malaysian Grand Prix, so it makes sense to do both events in one trip. In our build up article I said that I had been dying to do the Malaysian Grand Prix again ever since we did it in 2004. It was a trip we all thoroughly enjoyed, but while I remembered why I loved the east, I had to be reminded why I hated the East. For those who haven't been there, 30 degrees is a cool day. The Subaru Fun Crew car club has been in existence for just under 2 years now. Founded by a small group of like minded passionate Subaru owners, its primary aim is to promote all things Subaru and at the same time be family orientated for its members. Even though the club is still fairly new, it is growing at a rapid pace with branches in P.E, KZN as well as further up north, they are about 150 members currently and still growing. [more]

Street 2 Strip at Killarney or as some call it, Friday action night, is the place where average Joe’s get to be heroes by battling their rivals down a 400m strip of tar. Extreme Festival, originally born up at Zwartkops Raceway has expanded itself to become the new national racing series in South Africa. Taking over from the previously known Wesbank Super Series, this new formula adds much needed flair in local racing. Time flies when you’re having fun and before we knew it, it was time for yet another round of the Saldanha Top End Drags event hosted by West Coast Racing. Held twice a year, this was the Easter Special which is hosted at the Saldanha Bay airfield, about just over an hour’s drive out of Cape Town. So I missed out on the last track day that Nish covered back in January and after going through his footage, it really made me want to be at the next one. The 28th of March was a perfect sunny Saturday for taking your pride and joy around the track and I made sure I was there. Every type of event see’s a different bunch of guys hanging out together. The Sepang Circuit is one of the newer (in F1 terms) circuits on the F. I. A. Formula 1 Calendar; it was designed by Herman Tilke (who also designed the Shanghai, Bahrain and Turkey F1 circuits) and officially opened on 7th March 1999. The circuit is located near the international airport, 60km’s away from the city of Kuala Lumpur. It is a clockwise circuit with the start/finish straight running on an East/West axis. This year’s AutoTrader SupaDrift Series got off to a roaring start at the Red Star Raceway, Mpumalanga, this weekend. Spectators were treated to an unbelievable triple first being set, with the series’ first visit to Mpumalanga, the first win by an international driver, and the debut of a first on South African shores car build. Mozambican Fullboost Performance driver Richat Kan entered the contest as a true dark horse and immediately set about shaking up the field. [more]

When last was I at a dyno day?! Wow, it’s been too long! It was welcomed news to hear that Club S2K were going to host an inter club dyno day at 1st Performance (old Ferroli) on the 7th of March. I always like going to events that are hosted at new venues because we all need a change of scenery some time. Dyno days in Cape Town go hand in hand with Dyno Tech in Brackenfell, but who knows, this might be the new hot spot for hosting dyno days now? [more]

It’s been a while since I last covered a Street 2 Strip event yet it never ceases to amaze me. It’s undoubtedly one of Killarney’s busiest events that they host. It just goes to show the demand for drag racing events in Cape Town. The best thing about it is that its ordinary guys off the street with their everyday vehicles. On the 8th of February, Last Lion Lifestyle held their first Supercar event in Cape Town - 12 of the finest supercars available in the city met up at the Table Bay hotel for an early morning drive toward the Franschhoek Motor Museum. The 28th February and the 1st of March will see South Africa’s own AutoTrader SupaDrift Series hit the Redstar Raceway, Mpumulanga, for the very first time. Traditionally a bike track, Redstar Raceway will welcome drifters with hair-raising speeds. Drivers are expected to hit 140km p/h before locking their tyres and engaging the drift. The final round of the International Passion for Speed series at Killarney on February 7 is rapidly acquiring a nostalgic carnival atmosphere as more static historic events are added to the program at no extra cost to the public. These include the display of the Formula 1 and Formula 2 cars from the Franschhoek Motor Museum in the pits nearest to the tart/finish, when they are not on the track. Here, pride of place will go to the ex-Jody Scheckter F1 Tyrrell Cosworth V8 that carried the South African to victory in both the British and Swedish Grands Prix in 1974. [more]

If you’re into local rallying at all, you would have certainly heard of the annual Fix-A-Smash All Tar Rally held at Killarney Raceway. It’s one of the most exciting events to watch, and even better to participate in. Even though I haven’t raced in it yet, I’ve heard from multiple people who have, and the unanimous conclusion is that it’s heaps of fun… and a car breaker of note! [more]

So this is the event that wrapped up the 2014 season of racing at Killarney Raceway. We saw a lot of upcountry visitors, especially from the friendly Eastern Cape Region and a few others.
