Heritage Day for me this
year was filled with a different kind of smoke that I must admit
I prefer. The smell of tyre and clutch abuse was lingering on
my clothing well into the evening thanks to the Last Lion Lifestyle
Supercar track day at Killarney International Raceway.
Most of us have been to track days before and I hate to boast
but this was like nothing you can ever imagine on your wildest
day. With supercar numbers reaching the 65+ mark this was definately
one of the largest supercar track days in South Africa, if not
Africa! This seems to be the trend with this group when they arrange
events.
The entrance of the new pit area alluded to something special
happening with the VIP rope and red-carpet.
The red carpet was lined with Lamborghini’s latest and greatest
including my new favourite, the Huracan, which had two stunning
examples on track all day.
We were spoilt to a sea of 458’s and R8’s which seem
to be the most popular weapon of choice for the a lot more fortunate
of society.
From race bred track machines like this GT3 to even 4 door super
luxury saloons like the Aston Martin Rapide S, they were all here
and on track!
Porsche were also well represented with some track ready road
cars in the GT range.
What a screamer she was!
Cars getting scrutineered in the Dunlop Zone before going out
on track.
The guys from RACE! teased us with their one of a kind wide body
Liberty Walked Nissan GTR R35 and stunning Vorsteiner M4.
The silent but definitely very violent BMW I8 Hybrid supercar
whispered around the track and chased down a lot of its louder
prey all afternoon.
Safety
at events like this is always a major concern because of the mere
value of the equipment used and the Killarney staff once again
provided an excellent service to the racers and spectator’s.
This KTM X Bow was one of the more unique cars on the day.
The pace cars (Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder driven by our very
own Raceweb Editor, Junaid Hamid & Mercedes AMG driven by
Dexter Bruce and Ernest Page) managed the on track proceedings
perfectly and by the end of the day you could see the massive
improvement in all-round driving.
Guests were well provided for all day with cold energy drinks
courtesy of Red Bull and awesome food followed by sponsored smokes
in the upstairs lounge area. The hive of activity was pit lane
which was filled with conversation, idling engines and laughter
all day.
If you're wondering, yes, this track day was in reverse. A once
in a life time chance to have driven Killarney in the anti clockwise
format. A Lamborghini Huracan and BMW i8 going the "wrong"
way into turn 3.
Because of the new anti-clockwise format, drivers were invited
to a special track day driving course a few days before the time
hosted by advanced driving instructor, Junaid Hamid at Mirror
Edge Networks. It was an interesting learning curve for most but
everyone walked away with new valuable information in hand and
boosted confidence to take on the reverse track. (Photo

The McLaren 650s was definately one of the quickest car's out
on track for the day.
The GTR playing catch with the big boys!
Like the last event the common denominator was the passion for
all things motorsport. The lifestyle being promoted is something
to aspire to because the grass is greener on the other side and
it’s really not that bad.
Now this is an ass I could look at all day long! Definately the
star car of the event.
Well
done to the team for arranging another perfect event and I am
keeping my fingers crossed for the next invitation. From left
to right: Junaid Hamid, Ish Kaskar, Ernest Page, Dexter Bruce,
Brandon Vorster (Lamborghini Cape Town). Benji Berman was missing
in this pic.
Thanks
to the event partners for all their support, Lamborghini Cape
Town, Dunlop Tyres, Velocity Cars and Red Bull.
