MY
TRACK DAY 14
April 2013 | Story by: Nish | Photos by: Otis J. Gore | Location:
Killarney Race Track
It
really had been forever since I did a proper track day.
Lots of shotgun rides, loads of Mickey Mouse Gymkhana's
and many MSA and S2S drags, but literally 10 years since
I did an actual track day. I
am always preaching to the "Street Racers" about
taking their cars to the track and racing in a controlled
environment. But I really can't stress it enough, even
attending a Gymkhana - I guarantee you that you'll learn
more about your car in those two or three runs than you
will ever learn in normal street driving.

great spectating action. [more]
CAPESTANCE
SLAMOMETER II 06

It
was only about a week ago when CapeStance announced on
their site that there was going to be a second Slamometer
event. It may have been short notice but word of this
upcoming event spread far and wide rather quickly since
their first
one was a great success, even though it was
held in a very much hidden away private business park
in Platterkloof. Arriving
at the new venue in King Edward Street, Parow, I had my
concerns. Like… is my car going to be safe parked
here? Should I carry all my gear with me? I felt like
I was in downtown Nigeria! It wasn’t very reassuring.
None the less I found a parking spot, got my gear and
started walking to what inevitability was going to be
a great car event.

Owning
your own house is a great thing, though it comes with
some ups and downs. On the up side you have the freedom
to do whatever you want, but on the down side you have
the responsibility of maintaining your fine establishment.
But, that comes with the territory and you don’t
mind a little “up keep” at the end of the
day. So
you’re
enjoying your house… what’s next? Invite all
your friends over to enjoy it with you, house party! Everyone
comes over, they have a blast, good company, good food,
good music and at the end of the night, or next morning,
everyone leaves and then, YOU have to clean up.

This
event started life back in 2009 when D1S (Drift Squad)
used to practice regularly at Club @mospheer in Lansdowne.
Even then, it was a game changing affair. But that goes
without saying because it was hosted by Drift Squad. Lights,
camera, action! They’re all about putting on a great
show and entertaining the crowds. Things have moved on
since then, bigger venues, Killarney Race Track, and bigger
names such as the stars and their cars. [more]

Thrills
and spills characterised a magnificent day’s racing
under sunny skies at Killarney, Cape Town for round two
of the Super Series national championship roadshow. Local
hero Johan Fourie (Afrox BMW) claimed the first win of
the Bridgestone Production Car event as he came home one
and a half seconds ahead of teammate Etienne van der Linde.
Third, and glued to the BMW’s exhaust, was Melvill
Priest in the Meuller Sport Audi RS4. [more]
The
organisers of the Knysna Simola Hillclimb regretfully
announce that the 2013 event, due to run from 17-19 May,
has been cancelled for this year. All other events in
the Speed Festival have also been cancelled excepting
the Knysna Motor Show, which is a stand-alone event and
will be held on 4 May. The
event, which grew tremendously in the four years that
it was run and had become one of South Africa’s
premier motorsport events, has been unable to secure a
title sponsor following the withdrawal of its previous
sponsor, necessitating this decision. [more]
Seven
teams lined up for the start of the indoor karting league
in Cape Town at Kenilworth Karting on Tuesday 26 February
that was dominated start to finish by Raceweb, with No
Fear second and AM Racing completing the top three. There
were plenty of new faces in the league, with four new
teams out of the seven that took part in the race. Raceweb
(returning after a year out), No Fear and Redline Racing
were the established teams, and were joined by newcomers
Auto Magneto (AM) Racing, Team Play, Maniacs and Sunworx.
Not all of the drivers in the new teams were novices,
however, as some of the drivers from 2012 who found themselves
without a team joined up with the 2013 entrants. The evening
started with a 15 minute qualifying session, which established
a starting order that would remain almost unchanged throughout
the race. [more]
Dave
Charlton, one of South Africa’s most successful
and respected racing drivers, died in Johannesburg on
Sunday afternoon, February 24. He was 76. He won the first
race he ever competed in (appropriately at the historic
East London grand prix circuit in 1960) and also won his
last (a charity celebrity race at Zwartkops Raceway in
1990). He competed in 13 World Championship Formula One
Grands Prix and was South Africa’s champion driver
for six successive years, from 1970 to 1975. David William

by his friends...[more]
This
is some golden footage from the 2011 Top Gear Festival
at Kyalami race track! Never seen before from this onboard
view, David Coulthard races against James May and Jeremy
Clarkson in their Renaults around the track after giving
them a massive head start. He then proceeds to take on
a superbike after that! A must watch! Thanks to alexanderhrabar
for the footage! [more]
