Spotlights
were on for the first nocturnal Auto Trader SupaDrift
Series event at the Dezzi Raceway in Port Shepstone, Saturday,
28th of June. Cameras circled on choppers above the track
as world-class drifting action below spurred on a Mexican
wave. “The atmosphere was electric. It was by far
the most responsive crowd we’ve had at our events
this year” said George Mienie, AutoTrader.co.za
CEO and title sponsor.

The
beautiful town of Knysna, whom for the fifth time, were
the hosts of the resident Knysna Speed Festival also known
as the Knysna/Simola Hill Climb… 1.9km’s of
high speed uphill racing against the clock, a test of
pure nerve and superb driving skill. After
their title sponsor pulled out in 2013, the town was left
in its restful manner but come 2014, the organizers managed
to secure a big fish of a sponsor, or rather, a big cat…
Jaguar! With a glorious history and heritage of racing,
this brand was the perfect fit to this event. With a massive
banner hanging over the start line that states “Racing
is in our blood”, Jaguar came to impress. [more] |

TOYOTA
86 TURBO WIDEBODY

Since
the conception of the Toyota 86 it has grown in just over
the last two years to become an almost overnight cult
classic. Development is happening in almost every major
motoring nation across the globe and it was very apparent
at SEMA 2013. We
saw more than 50 examples of the 86 last year in literally
all shapes, colours and race code readiness. The aftermarket
gods are truly smiling on this car but reality kicked
in and I realised that the conservative South African
market would take years to get to this level if at all.

UPCOMING
EVENT: POWERSERIES ROUND 4
PRESS
RELEASE | Posted: 09 June 2014
|
The
fourth round of the Power Series at Killarney on Saturday
includes an unusual entry from Bellville’s national
champion Kosie Weyers in a bottom of the range class C
Golf 1 in the Jive VW GTi Challenge, that is certain to
increase the attraction of this exciting category, regardless
of the weather conditions. But while Weyers will bring
the best out of class C drivers like Paul Simon and Craig
du Toit at the lower end of the field, the headline class
A battle between Nian du Toit, Christopher Swart and Durbanville
star Stiaan Kriel, could be even closer. With the Midas
magicians having had time to recover from the chaos that
characterized the first Clubman race during the third
round of the title chase, it’s going to be a case
of “Deutschland Uber Alles,” at the head of
the field. [more] |

SUPADRIFT 04: DRIFTING AT DEZZI DAZZLED FANS
PRESS
RELEASE | Posted: 06 June 2014 | Images: Dave Nisbet
|
The
Dezzi Raceway played its part this Saturday, 31st May,
by providing the perfect track conditions for what was
one of the smoothest running, but most technically thrilling
events in the AutoTrader SupaDrift Championship series.
Over 35 drivers set out around the affectionately nicknamed
‘corkscrew track’ in Port Shepstone, each
driver trying to out do the next. “The judges had
their work cut out for them this weekend. The technical
showmanship was impressive,” said presenting sponsor,
AutoTrader CEO, George Mienie. The track demanded a substantial
power outlay from the vehicles as they made their way
from the bowl of the track up towards the finish.

MONSTER
ENERGY SUPERGP ROUND 3 - KILLARNEY

The
3rd stop of the new Monster Energy SuperGP finally hit
Cape Town. It’s the track that most of the riders
call their favourite and this definitely brought out the
neck to neck racing. With
warm ups starting a bit later on Sunday all the riders
were able to get into their pits early and work on their
respective bikes with their mechanics to make the last
few changes before the battle began. The
SuperM class was smaller than the other rounds but what
an action packed class it is showcasing that every generation
(18 years - 57 years) can battle it out to contend for
the number one spot. [more] |

Being
a Capetonian, we find ourselves being very spoilt with
a lot of things compared to our upcountry brothers. We
have one of the wonders of the world, Table Mountain,
right on our doorstep. We have beautiful oceans, our airport
is around the corner, and everything is 10 minutes away,
unlike Joberg’s “15”. But
there’s one thing that I absolutely envy the Gauteng
boys for having, and that’s SupaDrift. Now for those
that don’t know, SupaDrift is South Africa’s
premier national drifting championship. Yeah there are
a few other drift competitions out there but this is the
real deal. It’s been going strongly on an uphill
road to success over the last few years, but Cape Town
has never ever seen one. Until now! [more] |

SALDANHA
TOP END DRAGS: EASTER 2014
Event

Location:
Saldanha Airfield

There’s
no denying that there has been a lot of talk about the
previous two Saldanha drag events and in all honesty I
wasn’t sure what this one was going to be like.
But in retrospect I am glad I went. From pulling into
the main gates, to parking, everything went smooth and
was so relaxed. Not to say that there wasn’t an
atmosphere, yes there was, but it was fueled by nitrous
oxide and avgas rather than the kind you need to be 18
years or older to purchase. [more] |
