2014
- Another year that just flew by. Normally this is the time of
year when everyone is tired and we all can’t wait for leave
to kick in for December Holidays.
Motivation levels are normally the lowest in December, but somehow
we always end up with the most amount of work to do in what’s
always the shortest span of time.
Trackside December is no different, with RACEWEB just coming off
Saldahna Drags, in December it’s always Jam Packed. Final
Regional Race for the Year, The All Tar Rally, Final Track Day
for the Year and then the constantly name changing event for drifting,
drags and show n shine held on the 27th of December this year,
Street Fest.
For the first time in a while we actually appreciated the Cape
Doctor. If it wasn’t for the wind we would have boiled at
the track. It didn’t help much while trying to light a cigarette
though.
GTi Challenge and Midas Clubman’s were tight and exciting
as usual. Chilling on turn one saw lots of competitors entering
turn one, two and three wide while the exit of turn 3 saw some
bumping and barging between the leaders and lapped competitors.
A mid-afternoon break saw strong man Ben Visagie pull a 20 ton
truck about 20 metres or so with around 20 marshalls on board
as well. Well done to him, it’s not something we will be
trying anytime soon! It must be said that we never thought we
would see the day that a truck would be on the circuit. Not a
normal truck that is.
The 3-Hour endurance race was the headline event scheduled to
run from 16hr15 – 19hr15. We have to admit that it was looooooooooooonnggggg.
The first 15 minutes or so was exciting, but after that it became
a bit of a procession, for the spectators at least.
The pits however, was a different story, this is where all the
action was happening. Driver changes, fuel stops and even some
tyre changes where regulation allowed.
What we really love about these sort of race though is the range
of competitors in one race.
It’s not often you get to see a Porsche’s, Dodge Vipers
and Pillbeams battling turbo charged M3’s, CRX turbo’s
and even an Opel Corsa.
While they definitely weren’t in the same league, it made
for interesting watching none the less.
With the chequered flag falling at about 19:20 the race finished
about 30 minutes before sunset.
The top three finishers were invited to the start finish line
for trophy presentations by WPMC Chairman – Des Easom, followed
by champagne celebrations. (Reminds me, I must still clean my
camera – thanks for that guys).
