This past weekend Killarney
Raceway played host the momentous Ford and Friends, a much anticipated
event aimed at paying tribute and homage to everything that is
Ford.
Founded way back in June 1903, Ford Motor Company has enjoyed
more than a century of motoring excellence, and on this sunny
day in Cape Town, recognition was given to those that have lived
the Ford name to the tee.
The day was filled with a combination regional main circuit racing,
special exhibition racing events as well as show cars, showcasing
both past and present road cars and racers that have evolved over
the 109 years of Ford.
Some of the racing highlights together with the days regional
racing included an open 90 min special endurance race as well
as an ‘all Ford’ exhibition race that included the
likes of the mighty Owen Ashley V8’s Mustangs together with
the classic Anglia’s, Falcons and Cortina’s, all in
one race!
Coupled with that was the Drift Africa driver search and drifting
display as well as Gymkhana at the oval…in total, a sum
of 228 cars entered to compete on the day, quite something to
behold.
The car showcasing was also quite spectacular as it featured all
the legends that have built the Ford Legacy. Perfect examples
of Cortina’s, Falcons and the Mighty Mustang’s of
yesteryear were all lined up alongside their present day successors,
which included the Focus ST’s and RS’s of today.
There were also some special additions such as an American imported
Falcon Nascar, past and present Ford rally cars as well as a Monster
Energy Midget that lit up Killarney drag strip with some fine
burnout displays.
Altogether a fine display of cars that has made Ford what it is
today.
Terry Grant
was up to his "tricks" as usual in his little legend
car.
It sure did
turn out to be an amazing day of motor racing in the Mother City.
This rally
style Escort was amazing to look at, with a V6 lump at the back
and an intercooler mounted in the roof!
You
lose some races, you win some hearts...
Associate Editor Bryn Musselwhite of Speedhunters.com
was also in attendance snapping away. Here he is accepting a token
of good gesture, a photo taken by an avid Killarney fan.
The V8 Masters
Series is always a crowd pleaser with their rolling thunder soundtracks.
Raceweb Issue
26 cover car, the Cool Banana's Subaru of Malcolm Royston took
on the Midas Clubmans challenge and as he says, he came to eat
bubble gum and kick ass... he was clearly all out of bubble gum!
The G5 Crew was strong in attendance making
sure they got noticed at the club display area.
Raceweb had
its own presence at the show by displaying two previous cover
car's, the Number Cruncher XR8 twin turbo of Zain Ryland and the
Wild Horse Mustang of Fakier Richards.
Two
rally legends paraded around the track with an awesome example
of Ford rally history in the Escort and modern technological advancement
with the current rally Ford Fiesta of Ashley Haigh Smith.
There were
hundreds of Fords, and then there were their friends. Here is
an ex Ben Morgenrood MAZDA 323 Triple Rotor WesBank Racer from
the glory days of South African racing doing a few demo laps around
the track.
